Rice Pages Two

A return to Yummy Mongolian means more rice paper.
(I wonder how crumbly the first batch is by now...)

Rice pages

Today I went with my classmates to Yummy Mongolian Grill for lunch...
I grabbed just about everything available at the buffet, but when all was said and done I still had two sheets of rice paper (used for making little spring roll type things from your grilled food) left over...
So I took them with me. Instead of doodling on my notebook during class, I tore the sheets in half and tested my four half sheets of rice paper as a drawing surface...
Enjoy. :)

Surprise Guests

Sometimes you open your sketchbook and forget you had done a drawing...
And it says "Hey! How's it going!?"

Crazy Hair Day

The other day I taught the 5th & 6th graders in the class in student teaching a lesson called "Crazy Hair Day". It's main focus is using repetition and line to create wild patterns for "hair" (and background, and abstraction)... Here's my notes from the board during the lesson:
The kids have been begging to see me draw, so I finally gave in and said I would do the assignment too after everyone was finished... And here's what they are all going to see when they walk into class on Monday:

Aquarians

I was asked to create some illustrations of one male and one female creature based on author Brian Burt's new novel: Aquarius Rising.
You can get more info about the book itself here: http://www.amazon.com/Aquarius-Rising-ebook/dp/B00CFP88H0

The creatures are mermaid-like humanoids...
Here's a bit of the description of the creatures from an expert from the book:
"Revelers floated everywhere.  Strings of limpets, whelks, and periwinkles glittered around their necks, clicking when they moved.  Brightly colored pigments stained their skin of blue and gray and silver with pictograms symbolizing the history of Aquarius.

Auriga floated a few meters away, skin gleaming silver in the sunlight, the fin ridges along her arms and legs and ear channels paling to a milky white. She had smeared her body with stripes of ebony and gold to mimic the markings of the butterfly fish from which she took her name.   The sight of her made him ache."

At this point I made a list of their traits, and just started doodling. Playing with various eye and body shapes and a few pose examples.

I emailed this in and got some feed back about the design, and then jumped to the next phase.
The actual drawing of the Aquarians:

Everyone was pleased with the drawings, so I scanned them in for final coloring!
...and this is how it all turned out:

Notebook Doodles

It's been a while since I've been able to post on here.. Sadly, I haven't had a lot of drawing time lately.
Being in grad school does that apparently. ;)
But, I have been taking notes in class...
And where there are notes, there are doodles!
Here's a few from the first few weeks of school...
